Masako Nunokawa

Mixed-media Artist / Researcher – Ph.D.

Masako Nunokawa is a Japan-based mixed-media artist and researcher based in Sapporo, holding a Ph.D. in International Public Relations and Media Studies. With a multidisciplinary background in architecture, affective cognitive science, art and media culture, and marketing, she explores a unique approach that integrates theory, sensibility, and artistic practice.

Her primary artistic theme focuses on the generative motion of light. Through research conducted at the University of Tsukuba and Hokkaido University, her practice visualizes the emerging process of perception and creation.

Her signature series “shroud.m” employs multi-layered materials such as Japanese glass beads, gold leaf, resin, and acrylic rods—sensitively depicting cosmic-scale phenomena including light, time, circulation, the sun and the moon, and the boundaries between dawn and night.

Her “flow.m” series explores abstract ink painting informed by Zen concepts such as mu-sō (formlessness), mu-jū (unattached mind), and mu-nen (no-thought), expressing the ever-changing movement of consciousness.

Having grown up in a family of art educators and continuing her creative work alongside a career in the creative industry, she began publishing academic papers on art from the 2000s onward. Since 2024, she has expanded her artistic presence globally through international art fairs.

From 2026, she will begin long-term activities based in Paris, further accelerating her international practice by advancing both research and creation in parallel.
